Illustration Friday: Puzzled or "Velma"

I've been watching the new Scooby-Doo cartoon Mystery Incorporated (thanks to Andrew) and it's the first time I've ever enjoyed the show.  Ever.  Scooby-Doo just always annoyed me.  But this new version of it is pretty good.  It's got some good story lines, some great in-jokes and a fun "I know that voice" kind of cast.

So I started sketching out some Velmas to see where it took me.

And here's where it took me!  What's funny is this week's Illustration Friday word is "puzzled" so it's like fate or something.

Flashback

So looking for inspiration for something to draw, I thought I'd try revisiting some of my previous work.  I did that a while ago with some old pinups (my pirate, cupid, mad scientist, spacegirl) and it worked out well so here's my revisiting, gulp, Lucha Babes.  Yikes!  That was 2004!  8 years ago, 8 YEARS AGO, when I wrote, drew, inked, lettered and published my own comic book.  Every one was doin' it so I wanted to see what the big deal was.  What a crazy kid I was!  Seriously, what was I thinking?  There was SO much work involved.  It really gave me a huge new respect for those artist who go it alone.  Good on ya!

Now

I still have a soft spot in my gut for my drawings, dated as they are.  It was actually pretty hard to capture what I remember being so easy to draw back then.  And to think I had 8 masked female characters!  I'm please how Desnuda's (I remembered her name!) sketch turned out so I might colour her in sometime when I'm bored.

Illustration Friday: Vocal

Oh boy, it's been a long time since I tried an Illustration Friday word.  Apparently they had some problems with their mailing list server so I hadn't been getting their words for about 3 months.  Out of sight, out of mind.

It's also been a LOOONG time since I did some sketching in the morning before I start work.  I miss it and want to get back into it.  So this is my attempt.  Not my best but, whatever.  The word is "vocal" so I pictured a hippy yelling in protest at something.  War, I suppose.

FanExpo 2012

I'm a-goin'!  I'll be sharing a table with Andrew of Notchordamnatchoz fame.  They're pretty on the ball this year as we already know where our table is.  I'd post it but I'm lazy right now with a head cold and don't feel like searching for it.  I'll update later.  We've got a few months to go.

I still have lots of prints to sell from last year.  I'm thinking of reprinting some of the ones I sold out of, like my Tattooed Lady and Stare.  I'm also putting together an art book (mainly for myself, details TBA) so I'm excited to get that done.  Plus buttons, buttons, buttons!  Cheapest (in price, not quality) buttons in the room!

I've got a few months of spring and summer to produce some new art for the show and the book.  Not feeling very creative that way right now but things change so fast, you just never know what might come into my mind!

More Wrestling

Yeah, yeah, more wrestling.  We recently went our first live WWE event (you can read more here) and had a great time!  He wrestled a broom.  So now I'm a fan of Dolph Ziggler.  Couldn't resist doing a pin-up of him since I bought his pink t-shirt.  So there.

Fishman

It's an unused icon for a slots game I'm currently working on.  I just couldn't get it quite right enough for the boss to like so he got left out.

Chubby Cars

These were test sketches for a new slots game.  Luckily another idea was picked to I didn't have to draw any more.  I don't like drawing cars.  Even super chubby cartoon ones.  Have I mentioned I don't like perspective either?  Cars have a lot of it.  I was planning on tweaking the heck out of them if they ever got to the colouring stage.  I do kind of like my little classic cadillac though.

Vampire

I had to come up with cartoony vampire for a work project and I enjoyed him do much, I did a few extra sketches of him.  I don't often to the big head, little body cartoon thing but I really liked it this time.

2012

So the year's off to a so-so start.

I've got some commissions lined up plus some ideas for fun things to do.

I've decided to try listing all the movies I see and books I read this year.  I know no one other than me will be interested in it but I know someone who's done it before and it's kinda neat looking back at it come the end of the year.

Fight!

Remember the old Mighty Men and Monster Maker toy from when you were a kid?  Yeah, me neither.  But Andrew from Notchordamnatchoz remembers it, he HAS one and he's started a fighting competition using it!  I've made my first attempt at recreating the first Mighty Monster.  Check it out at the Championship League of Champions blog.

Every two weeks there'll be a new monster created and anyone who wants to can create their own version of that monster.  It's just starting out so the more monsters, the better!  

Anyone want a cowgirl?

The person who commissioned me to create her has had their plans delayed and now they don't want her anymore.  The day came where they said they would have things "taken care of" (which I took to mean "paid off") but, nope.  Luckily I got paid for the sketch.  They seemed very excited once they saw the coloured versions, even gave some input to change some things which I did but now it looks like I'm out the final payment and the cowgirl is now mine.

So I'm going to offer her as a 8"x14" print (just the full body version, see it below) for $20, including shipping.  Just email me (via the Commissions page) or comment here and we'll trade info.
